A traditional Nashville hot chicken sandwich is barely even really a sandwich at all, unless you consider a bone-in quarter sitting atop two slices of spongy white bread to be a sandwich. If you do, that’s fine, but we wouldn’t suggest taking a big bite unless you want a gullet full of bones. But that’s one of the beautiful things about hot chicken; whether you prefer bone-in, breasts, tenders or wings, it’s all good!
In fact, some restaurant around Nashville offer up “Nashville Hot” dishes that aren’t necessarily even chicken at all. Eater Nashville recently compiled a list of “Unexpected Hot Chicken Dishes” with items that range from donuts, to pig ears to vegan spicy seitan and waffles. One item that particularly stood out was the Hot Chicken Shakshuka from Party Fowl. Available as part of their special weekend brunch menu, this dish is described as combining “three baked eggs and goat cheese with a robust tomato gravy seasoned with Party Fowl’s hot chicken spices and served with hot chicken and garlic butter French bread.” Get in my belly!
It’s not surprising that Party Fowl has a novel item on this list, because no restaurant in Nashville offers more creative interpretations of traditional hot chicken than Party Fowl does at their locations downtown, in Donelson and in Murfreesboro. Not only does the kitchen at Party Fowl offer up some very respectable bone-in half birds in spice levels ranging from mild to their infernal “Poultrygeist,” but they also incorporate their spicy chicken into all sorts of new incarnations appropriate for all three meals of the day.
For your morning hot chicken fix, you can choose between that delicious shakshuka, a hot chicken biscuit, a fiery version of eggs benedict, a novel goof on the Hawaiian specialty comfort food dish “Loco Moco” with a gravy-smothered hot chicken breast served with rice and eggs or spicy and sweet hot chicken and stuffed french toast. At lunch or dinner, the list of hot chicken options at Party Fowl stretches even longer. Enjoy your fiery fowl as tenders, or part of a plate of cheesy nachos or tacos, or as the base to a gooey poutine platter, or in various sandwiches like a Cuban or a Po’ Boy. You get the picture. Like Bubba Gump scrolling through his seemingly endless list of shrimp dishes, the hot chicken menu at Party Fowl goes on and on, and that’s why they are one of the best spots in town to scratch your hot chicken itch!
