Where should you go if you’re looking for something new in Charlotte? Right now, it better be South End. The area on the outskirts of Uptown has seen explosive food growth in 2019, and we’re just hitting mid-February.

101 W. Worthington Ave #110
If sharing is caring at your table, make plans to dine at Barcelona Wine Bar very soon. The Spanish tapas restaurant was founded in Connecticut and is now located in nine states (including D.C.) On the menu, you’ll find incredible cheeses and meats (including Jamón Mangalica, shaved straight off the leg), a long list of tapas, and larger dishes meant to share. Oh, and did we mention the wine selection of over 400 bottles?
We’ve got our eye on all the tapas, especially the mussels with saffron lobster broth and salsa verde, patatas bravas with salsa brava and garlic aioli, and mushrooms a la pancha with garlic and parsley.
1812 South Blvd
This part bar, part restaurant that took the place of The Liberty in South End is from the owners of Essex, a favorite in Uptown. On the English pub-like menu, you’ll find hearty dishes like a fried chicken or short rib sandwich, shrimp and grits, and fish and chips.
Rumor has it (and so says their website), there’s a hidden speak-easy located below The Manchester called Room 1812. Entry is only granted if you have the password, and guests are encouraged to contact the restaurant to receive the password of the day. The exclusive spot is also available for private booking.
1930 Camden Rd, Suite 260
Hawkers, originally founded in Orlando, Florida, is another spot for guests who love to share. The menu is comprised of 30+ small plates in addition to noodles, salads, and rice dishes. You’ll fine tasty cocktails like the Boozy Boba and Five-Spice Old Fashioned or non-alcoholic drinks such as Thai tea and Vietnamese coffee.
Dining on a budget? Hawkers is right up your alley. Select small plates are $3 from 3 – 6 PM on weekdays and 9 PM – close Sunday – Thursday. All regular-menu items are all under $10 on a daily basis.
2322 Dunavant Street
Love steak and fries? This classic combo is what The Dunavant is all about. For $25, you’ll be served bread, soup or salad, culotte cut steak with your choice of sauce, and bottomless truffle fries. Wow.
If you’re looking for a more selective approach, try something off the small plates menu, including beef skewers, bacon mac and cheese, roasted brussel sprouts, or stuffed mushrooms. Top your night off (if you still have room) with a slice of chocolate cake or a few scoops of sorbet.
